Test Your Saffron at Home – In Under 5 Minutes.

You don't need a lab. A glass of water will tell you everything.

  1. 1

    The Water Test

Drop 2-3 threads into a glass of warm water. Real saffron slowly releases a golden-yellow colour over 10-15 minutes. Fake saffron bleeds red or orange instantly.

  2. 2

    The Touch Test

Rub a thread between wet fingers. Genuine saffron stains your skin golden-yellow and won't dissolve. Fake saffron crumbles or turns into a paste.

  3. 3

    The Smell Test

Real Kashmiri saffron has a strong, sweet, earthy scent – like honey mixed with fresh hay. If it smells like plastic, chemicals, or nothing – it's not real.

  4. 4

    The Flame Test

Hold a thread near a flame. Genuine saffron won't catch fire easily – it darkens and releases a pleasant aroma. Fake saffron burns quickly and smells like paper.

What Makes

Saffron Powerful?

Three natural compounds define the quality of every saffron thread. Kasmirana tests for all three.

Safranal – The Aroma

Safranal is the volatile oil responsible for saffron's unmistakable fragrance – earthy, warm, and slightly sweet. A strong presence means the saffron was harvested at the right time and dried with care.

Crocin – The Colour

Crocin is the natural pigment that gives saffron its deep golden-red hue. Kasmirana consistently tests above 250 on the crocin index – ISO Category I, the highest grade possible.

Picrocrocin – The Flavour

Picrocrocin is the compound behind saffron's bittersweet taste. It is a marker of freshness – the more picrocrocin, the more recently the saffron was harvested.

ISO 3632 – The Global Standard

The ISO classifies saffron into four categories. Only Category I passes the strictest tests for colour, aroma, and flavour.

Parameter Category I (Kasmirana) Category II Category III Category IV
Crocin (colour) > 190 150-190 100-150 < 100

Every batch is independently tested and certified to meet or exceed ISO Category I. Our crocin scores consistently exceed 250 – among the highest recorded for any saffron in the world.
